Druze Reservist Files Defamation Lawsuit Over IDF Insult
A Druze reservist has initiated a defamation lawsuit against a senior Israel Air Force (IAF) officer after being publicly insulted during a military ceremony. The incident occurred at the rank-awarding event held at Tel Nof Air Force Base, where Master Sgt. (res.) Amal Atila was compared to a terrorist in front of his peers.
During the ceremony in May 2024, Atila alleges that the officer remarked, “You look like a Nukhba terrorist.” This comment, which reportedly elicited laughter from approximately 30 attendees, left Atila feeling “humiliated” and “ashamed.” In a statement to N12 News, Atila recalled the moment, saying, “I was in shock. I felt the most humiliated in the world.”
Atila, who has dedicated himself to protecting Israeli citizens, described the remark as particularly hurtful. He noted that he even has a tattoo of the Israeli flag on his arm, symbolizing his commitment to the country. He expressed his disbelief at being labeled a terrorist, stating, “Calling me a Nukhba terrorist is absurd. In my daily life, I protect this country. I love it wholeheartedly.”
The incident had a profound impact on Atila, who has twice received the Outstanding Soldier of the Base award during his service. He mentioned that the laughter from his fellow soldiers intensified his feeling of humiliation. “All the friends who were there laughed. Everyone saw it, and no one said a word to him,” he said. Following the incident, Atila stated that he has refused to wear his new rank, emphasizing, “It’s a really deep wound.”
After confronting the officer, Atila reported that he was dismissed with the explanation that it was “just a joke.” He questioned how others would feel if they were singled out in such a manner, particularly as the only Druze in the group. “Would they still think it was funny?” he asked.
While the officer eventually offered a private apology, Atila felt it was insufficient. “Just as he mocked me in public, he should have apologized in public,” he noted. Atila served as a fuel technician during Operation Iron Swords, playing a critical role in supporting IAF strikes in Iran and Lebanon. His responsibilities included refueling aircraft during military operations, which he described as vital to the war effort.
Through Shimon Haan Law Offices, Atila is seeking NIS 150,000 in damages for the harm to his dignity and reputation. Attorney Nimrod Haan characterized the incident as one of the most degrading remarks directed at a loyal Druze soldier. Haan stated, “This intolerable comparison to murderous terrorists strikes at the very heart of the partnership between the Druze community and the State of Israel.” He emphasized the need for the court to convey that such statements will not be tolerated.
Atila expressed hope that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would take the incident seriously and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. He believes that the military should uphold the dignity of all its members, regardless of their background.
