New Ramp Opens at Nashville Airport to Ease I-40 Traffic NOW

UPDATE: A new interstate access ramp has just opened at Nashville International Airport (BNA), significantly enhancing access to I-40 East from Terminal Drive. This crucial infrastructure development was completed early this morning by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and aims to alleviate persistent traffic congestion experienced by travelers.

The opening of this ramp is part of a larger $135.9 million project to revamp the I-40 interchange at Donelson Pike. Officials believe this addition will make a substantial impact on traffic flow, particularly in light of the eight-hour backup that occurred on September 15, 2023. This event underscored the urgent need for expanded roadway capacity to accommodate increasing travel demands.

To assist drivers, new signage has been installed, although ongoing paving and coating work will continue until November. Travelers are advised to remain cautious as work zones are still active.

The newly opened ramp includes a collector-distributor road designed to streamline traffic from the airport’s Terminal Drive onto I-40 eastbound. This is expected to improve the merging process onto the interstate, enhancing overall travel efficiency.

The project is only a part of a more extensive plan that will see BNA undergo a $1.17 billion renovation of its roadways and parking facilities. This ambitious endeavor is projected to reach completion by August 2027, although there is potential for an earlier finish, facilitated by up to $6 million in incentives for the contractor provided by the Metro Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA).

For those impacted by these changes, TDOT and BNA® are actively providing updates through BNA’s text alert system. This service aims to keep passengers informed about real-time developments during this transitional phase, ensuring that travelers are aware of the new Collector-Distributor (CD) Road and the ramp to I-40 eastbound, which officially opened today.

As final pavement markings and texture coatings are set to conclude by November, travelers can expect smoother commutes ahead. The collaboration between TDOT and BNA is pivotal in addressing the growing traffic challenges posed by the airport’s rising passenger numbers. This project is a significant step in enhancing Nashville’s infrastructure and ensuring that it meets future demands.

Stay tuned as we continue to monitor this developing story and its impact on Nashville’s travel landscape.
