UPDATE: A truck driver was shot and wounded by law enforcement after attempting to ram a vehicle into the U.S. Coast Guard Base Alameda in the San Francisco Bay Area on Thursday night. Authorities confirm the driver tried to “weaponize” the vehicle, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the driver ignored multiple verbal commands to stop and accelerated backward at high speed towards officers. In response to this imminent threat, law enforcement discharged several rounds, wounding the driver in the stomach. He is expected to survive, but it remains unclear if he was hit by a bullet or debris.
A bystander was also injured during the incident, struck by a fragment, and was treated at a local hospital before being released. Fortunately, no Coast Guard personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation.
FBI spokesperson Cameron Polan stated, “At this time, the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no known current threat to the public.” Video footage from the scene shows a U-Haul truck attempting to back into the base, leading to widespread concern among local residents.
Earlier that day, protests were held near the base, with demonstrators opposing federal immigration enforcement. These protests coincided with President Donald Trump‘s decision to call off a planned surge of federal agents into San Francisco, a move he deemed unnecessary after discussions with local leaders. Mayor Daniel Lurie and Governor Gavin Newsom cited declining crime rates as justification for their stance.
As tensions continue, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents were reported to be arriving at the base for potential ramped-up immigration enforcement amidst ongoing protests. The situation is developing rapidly, and authorities are closely monitoring it.
Coast Guard Island, where the incident occurred, is a federally owned facility situated in the Oakland Estuary between Oakland and Alameda. Public access to the base is restricted, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
As investigations proceed, the community remains on alert. This incident highlights increasing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and federal presence in urban areas. More updates are expected as the authorities continue to assess the situation and provide necessary information to the public.
