National Drug Take Back Day: Safely Dispose of Medications Now

URGENT UPDATE: The Department of Consumer Protection is calling on residents to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, April 25. This critical initiative, spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), aims to promote public health by encouraging the safe disposal of unwanted or expired medications.

On April 25, participating locations across Connecticut will accept a wide range of items, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, treatments for pets, and medicated lotions or ointments. However, please note that the initiative does not allow the disposal of used sharps, hazardous waste, thermometers, or personal care products like shampoo or deodorant.

“Drug Take Back Day is a great reminder to keep track of what’s inside our medicine cabinets and to get rid of unwanted medication,” stated DCP Commissioner Bryan T. Cafferelli. He emphasized the importance of this initiative in preventing medication misuse and enhancing public safety.

Residents who cannot participate this weekend are encouraged to review tips for year-round safe drug disposal. Connecticut boasts 117 permanent drug drop boxes available statewide, providing ongoing options for safe disposal.

This event represents a significant opportunity for individuals to actively engage in community health and safety efforts. By disposing of medications properly, participants help reduce the risk of accidental poisoning and drug abuse.

Mark your calendars for April 25 and take advantage of this chance to make a difference in your community. For more information on locations and resources related to Drug Take Back Day, visit dea.gov/takebackday.
