A new initiative aimed at improving access to mental and behavioral health services was launched on October 18, 2023, in Lumberton, North Carolina. The program, named Let’s Talk-NC, focuses on connecting residents with available resources and services while also addressing the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
Funded by a grant, Let’s Talk-NC offers free assessments, screenings, and referrals to behavioral and mental health services for community members. The program is administered by the Old North State Medical Society (ONSMS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting health and wellness in North Carolina.
During the launch event, Dr. Zenobia Edwards, executive director of ONSMS, emphasized the initiative’s mission. She noted that Let’s Talk-NC aims to foster connections through conversation, ultimately working to dismantle the stigma that often prevents individuals from seeking help.
The event, held at The Carter Clinic on North Elm Street, also featured remarks from Dr. Karen Smith, a family practice physician and member of the ONSMS. Dr. Smith, who is also the newly elected president-elect of the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS), spoke about the ongoing stigma surrounding mental health and how it, combined with a lack of awareness about available services, contributes to individuals not seeking necessary care.
Addressing Critical Community Needs
The choice of Robeson and Scotland counties for the program’s launch was deliberate. Both areas face significant challenges, including high poverty rates, poor health outcomes, and elevated crime rates, which rank among the highest in the state. Kelly Crosbie, the Division Director of Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services (NCDHHS), highlighted the statewide necessity for initiatives like Let’s Talk-NC. She underscored the importance of addressing these critical social determinants of health to improve overall community well-being.
Residents of Robeson County can access the Let’s Talk-NC program by visiting Let’s Talk-NC.org or by calling (743) 643-4310 to engage in the pre-assessment process. The initiative is committed to collaborating with all local providers to ensure comprehensive support for those in need.
As the program takes root, Let’s Talk-NC represents a significant step forward in enhancing mental health services within the community, encouraging open dialogue and promoting access to essential care.
