BREAKING: The Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB) has just unveiled an innovative outdoor “catio” designed to enhance the lives of adoptable cats. This new structure not only allows shelter kitties to bask in the sun but also provides a safe environment for them to thrive and socialize.
Located in Vallejo, California, the Ila Emerson Memorial Catio is equipped with wrap-around enclosed hard netting, enabling cats to enjoy fresh air while remaining secure. The multi-level platforms encourage play and relaxation, offering a stimulating atmosphere for the shelter’s feline residents.
With the support of generous donors, the catio is furnished with luxurious cat trees, sensory toys, and cozy bedding, creating a home-like environment for the cats. “Having the space to come out and roam benefits everybody,” said Cat Staff member Kristina George. She emphasized that this new space significantly promotes social interaction among the cats, which is crucial for their adoption success.
This transformative project took just seven weeks to complete with contributions from local businesses such as Foster Lumber and Golden State Lumber. The construction was expertly handled by Marin-based catio specialist Roger Sierra and his son, Brooke. HSNB Director Carol Stillson noted the previous limitations faced by the cats, stating, “Before, they were confined to two small rooms. Now, with access to cozy nooks and shaded perches, they can experience a taste of nature.”
In a significant shift toward improved adoptions, scheduled meet-and-greets in the catio allow potential adopters to interact with the cats in an open, engaging environment. This initiative is expected to streamline the adoption process and encourage more families to welcome a furry friend into their homes.
Starting on November 1, the shelter will also kick off its annual adoption special, offering reduced rates on black and tuxedo cats. Unfortunately, due to negative associations surrounding black cats during this time of year, adoptions for these felines are paused until late October to ensure their safety. However, from November onwards, there will be a $50 discount on kitten adoption fees and a $25 discount for cats aged six months and older. Additionally, families adopting pairs of cats will benefit from a $50 discount, making it easier to bring home two companions.
HSNB Board President Joseph Hayden stressed the importance of thorough vetting for potential adopters, stating, “We do our homework… we are strict because we want to ensure it’s in the best interest of the animal.”
The launch of the Ila Emerson Memorial Catio marks a new era for the shelter, promising a happier and healthier environment for the cats while facilitating successful adoptions. For more information about the adoption process or to schedule a visit, interested parties can check the Humane Society of the North Bay’s official website.
This development not only enhances the lives of shelter cats but also encourages community engagement and support for animal welfare. Don’t miss the chance to meet your new furry friend in this inviting new space!
