John S. Zweizig, 89, Passes Away in Harrisburg; Community Mourns

UPDATE: John S. Zweizig, aged 89, has passed away peacefully at Columbia Cottage in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. His death, confirmed earlier today, has left a profound impact on the Shoemakersville community where he was a beloved figure.

Born on February 17, 1936, in Reading, PA, John was the son of Robert and Laura (Stoudt) Zweizig. He is preceded in death by his cherished wife, Patricia, who died in 2017 after sharing a remarkable 66 years of marriage.

John is survived by his daughter, Crystal Zweizig Hartz, of Harrisburg, and his son, Jason Zweizig, along with his wife, Kris, from Mohrsville, PA. He was also a proud grandfather to Shelby Morris, Ashley Hartz, and Austin Zweizig, and had five great-grandchildren: Brantley, Colson, Audric, Lily, and Aven.

Throughout his life, John embodied a strong work ethic, initially working on his family’s farm before becoming a cross-country truck driver for Diener Industries. He later dedicated over 25 years to Mid Atlantic Canning as a shift foreman. His commitment extended beyond his job; John proudly served his country as a U.S. Army veteran, holding the position of Tank Commander and later continuing his service in the Army Reserves.

A member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and the Shoemakersville Fire Company, John was also affiliated with Vaux Lodge #406 F. & A.M. in Hamburg. His warm smile and lighthearted sense of humor made him a beloved member of the community. Known for always having a joke ready, he brought joy and laughter to everyone around him.

John’s family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Columbia Cottage in Linglestown for their dedicated care and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s memory to the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, located at 58 Kennel Road, Birdsboro, PA 19508.

Services are scheduled for Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 7:00 PM at Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., located at 223 Peach Street, Leesport. A viewing will take place from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM prior to the service. Burial will be private at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Tilden Twp.
