Hopkinton Volunteers Provide Free Rides to Seniors in Need

In Hopkinton, a dedicated group of volunteers is transforming the lives of local seniors by providing essential transportation through the Dial-A-Ride Program. This initiative offers free rides to those who are unable to drive, ensuring they can access vital services such as medical appointments, grocery shopping, and social activities.

The program operates five days a week, with volunteers using their own vehicles to assist residents in Hopkinton, Contoocook, and nearby Concord. During an appreciation lunch held at the Slusser Center on October 24, 2025, community members gathered to celebrate the contributions of these volunteers.

Among them was Allita Dunn, who has dedicated over a decade to the Dial-A-Ride Program. At 80 years old, Dunn reflects on her own experiences as a caregiver for her mother in Florida. “I was made aware of the need, and it’s my way of giving back,” Dunn stated. “Sometimes I think of my mother when I’m doing it.”

The Dial-A-Ride volunteers, who come from various backgrounds, share a common goal: to alleviate the isolation faced by many seniors. Carol Haless, a volunteer and board member, emphasizes the importance of social interaction. “They’re stuck in their homes. They can’t get out,” Haless explained. “We’ll take them to the hair salon to have their hair done, because that’s important for your mental wellness, which is all part of living.”

Many volunteers, like Cettie Connolly, have personal experiences that inspired them to join the program. Connolly previously assisted her sister in Massachusetts, where access to similar services was limited. Now, as both a driver and board member, she finds the work rewarding. “You get more back than what you’re giving,” Connolly said. “Their stories are really interesting.”

Despite the program’s long-standing presence, some residents remain unaware of its availability. Organizers continually seek new volunteers, not only for driving but also for scheduling and administrative tasks. The flexibility of the program allows drivers to accept or decline ride requests based on their availability, making it a manageable way to contribute to the community.

Dunn appreciates this flexibility, allowing her to volunteer as long as she is able. “I feel useful and enjoy it. This is what a community does,” she remarked. “I can’t imagine being unable to drive, even in a town like this, where things aren’t that far away.”

The Dial-A-Ride Program is a crucial lifeline for many seniors, ensuring they maintain their independence and connection to the community. As these volunteers continue their important work, they embody the spirit of generosity and support that defines Hopkinton.
