Windows 10 Market Share Plummets After Support Ends, Gamers Shift

UPDATE: The end of support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, has triggered a dramatic shift among gamers, with many now migrating to Windows 11. According to the latest data from Valve, the transition is having immediate and significant impacts on the gaming landscape.

In the most recent Steam Hardware & Software Survey, Windows 11 has surged to a commanding 63.57% share of all Steam users, marking a robust increase of 3.18 percentage points from the previous month. Meanwhile, Windows 10’s share has plummeted, losing 3.94 points to settle at just 31.14%. This shift reveals a clear trend: as support ends, gamers are increasingly moving away from Windows 10.

Despite this decline, a small number of users—specifically 0.09%—still cling to Windows 10, which many enthusiasts regard as the best version ever released. However, with certain features now inaccessible and support officially terminated, this group may dwindle further in the coming months.

The overall dominance of Windows on Steam remains striking, holding an overwhelming 94.84% share of the platform, albeit down 0.75 points. Linux and macOS trail far behind with 3.05% and 2.11%, respectively, highlighting Windows’ stronghold on the gaming community.

In hardware trends, the Nvidia RTX 3060 continues to reign as the most popular graphics card on Steam, holding a market share of 4.3%. The laptop version of the RTX 4060 follows closely at 4.1%, while the RTX 3050 rounds out the top three with 2.96%. Other notable hardware preferences include the classic 16GB of RAM utilized by 41.49% of users and 8GB of video memory favored by 33.46% of participants.

As the gaming industry evolves, the implications of this shift in operating systems are significant. The migration to Windows 11 could reshape gaming experiences and compatibility, as game developers adapt to the new platform.

What’s Next: Gamers and developers alike are now watching closely to see how this transition will impact game performance and feature availability on Windows 11. As more users make the switch, the landscape of PC gaming is set for a notable transformation.
