UPDATE: A groundbreaking multifaith boxing event took place on July 15, 2023, at the JW3 cultural centre in London, where a team of young Jewish and Muslim boxers from Israel showcased unity and resilience amid ongoing tensions. The initiative, titled Gloves and Doves, aims to counter the narrative that “Zionism is racism” by promoting peace and understanding through sport.
The event featured a team of six Israeli boxers—two Muslims and four Jews—who faced off against British competitors in a series of bouts designed to highlight the diverse fabric of Israeli society. As the competition unfolded, vibrant Israeli flags adorned the venue, and the slogan “fight for peace” resonated in English, Arabic, and Hebrew throughout the arena.
“We are here for peace, we are here for unity,” said Tony Milch, founder of Gloves and Doves and a dual British-Israeli national. Having relocated to Israel in 2019, Milch emphasized the importance of bringing young people from various backgrounds together in a demonstration of coexistence.
This event marks the second year that Israeli boxers have participated in the London competition, which last year took place in Camden. The project seeks to enlighten audiences who may be unaware of the multicultural reality in Israel. “Many people who attend don’t even know there are Arabs in Israel,” Milch remarked, highlighting the transformative impact of the initiative.
The event received backing from the prestigious World Boxing Council (WBC), underscoring the sport’s potential to foster connections across cultural divides. The atmosphere was charged with positivity, as boxers and spectators alike celebrated their shared passion for the sport.
One standout moment came when Alireza Ghadiri, also known as Razor Ali and an undefeated professional boxer of Iranian descent, attended to meet the fighters and present the Alexander Mashkevitch Award for Boxer of the Night. This recognition was awarded to Mahmoud Majid, a 13-year-old Arab Israeli from Makr, who impressed the audience with his technical skills.
British competitor Charles Whitewood, who has over 15 years of boxing experience, praised the camaraderie formed during the event. “We didn’t trade many words, we traded punches instead, which brought us closer than words ever could,” he stated after winning his match against an Israeli opponent from Hadera.
The evening concluded with a powerful message of unity and respect, showcasing that boxing can transcend cultural barriers and foster understanding among diverse communities. Whitewood described the experience as “one of the best” events he has participated in, emphasizing the love felt in the boxing community that evening.
As the Gloves and Doves initiative continues to grow, it serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder that through sport, individuals can come together to fight for peace. To keep up with future events and developments, follow the group on Instagram.
The world is watching as this inspiring movement unfolds, and the impact of boxing as a unifying force is stronger than ever.
