A 70-year-old man is recovering in the hospital following a hit-and-run incident in El Cajon, California, that resulted in serious injuries. Julio Arreola was struck while crossing the street near the intersection of Fletcher Parkway and Pioneer Way around 15:30 on March 12, 2024.
Arreola described his experience from the hospital, emphasizing his survival, saying, “I was lucky not to get killed or paralyzed.” He sustained multiple fractures, including injuries to his ribs and spine, and required staples to treat a head wound. His sister, Luz Arreola, provided details about his condition and the challenges he now faces.
The incident has drawn attention not only for its severity but also because it reflects a troubling trend of hit-and-run accidents in the area. Recently, a six-year-old boy lost his life near City Heights, and another incident in El Cajon resulted in a twelve-year-old boy being hospitalized.
Following the hit-and-run, police apprehended the suspect, 19-year-old Brian Guevara, after utilizing license plate readers to track his vehicle. Guevara has since been booked on charges related to the incident.
As Arreola focuses on his recovery, he expressed concern for others who may be affected by similar accidents. He is currently unable to work at his TV repair shop due to his injuries, which adds financial strain as he navigates medical expenses and everyday bills. His family is advocating for increased driver awareness to prevent further tragedies on the roads.
