BREAKING: Guam Community College (GCC) has officially unveiled its newly renovated Student Success Center during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Friday, October 20, 2023. This significant milestone is part of a $6.3 million capital improvement project aimed at enhancing student resources and facilities on the Mangilao campus.
The 6,000-square-foot building, also referred to as Building B, is strategically located at the front of the campus and is set to become a central hub for student engagement. The center will accommodate the Assessment and Counseling Department, GCC Identification Card Services, the Faculty Senate office, and a state-of-the-art computer lab on the second floor, complete with an outdoor veranda for student relaxation and collaboration.
“This building serves as the heart of our campus—where student learning, creativity, and success begin,” emphasized GCC President Mary A.Y. Okada. She highlighted that the center’s conception stemmed directly from student feedback, asserting, “Our students were the driving force behind this project, just like they have been for many other efforts on campus.”
Designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards, the new facility marks the eighth environmentally sustainable building on GCC’s campus. “This project reflects our commitment to sustainability and innovation in educational spaces,” added Okada.
The funding for this ambitious project was sourced from the Governor’s Education Stabilization Fund and GCC’s Capital Projects Fund, ensuring that the initiative added no debt to the college. Okada noted, “We’re constantly finding creative ways to fund our capital projects through multiple sources. That’s our strength—and our promise to the community.”
As GCC continues to focus on improving student experiences, this grand opening underscores the institution’s dedication to prioritizing its students’ needs. With the Student Success Center now operational, students will have enhanced access to vital resources that support their academic journeys.
Expect a surge in student participation and engagement as the center begins its operations. This development not only elevates the educational infrastructure at GCC but also stands as a testament to the power of student voices in shaping their learning environment.
Stay tuned for more updates on how this facility impacts the GCC community and beyond.
