BREAKING: San Francisco police officers shot a man and his dog this afternoon near Union Square following a chaotic incident involving an alleged dog bite. The shooting occurred at approximately 4:27 p.m. after officers were flagged down by a victim of a dog attack at the intersection of Market and O’Farrell streets.
According to a police statement, the officers responded to reports of a “large off-leashed dog” that had bitten a victim “unprovoked.” Upon arrival, the police described the canine as continuing to display aggression towards bystanders. In the process of attempting to arrest the man and secure his dog, officers opened fire, injuring both.
The police further noted that the dog initially fled the scene but returned and subsequently bit one of the responding officers, who sustained minor injuries and was treated on-site. The man shot by police was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
