Lynnfield Honors Veterans as David Gallo Inspires Community

UPDATE: Community members in Lynnfield gathered on November 7, 2023, to honor local veterans at the Veterans Memorial in Lynnfield Common. The urgent ceremony featured impactful speeches from military and civilian leaders, emphasizing the sacrifices made by veterans and their families.

Veteran’s Agent Bruce Siegel emceed the event, while Select Board Chairman Phil Crawford delivered a poignant address. Guest of honor, retired Army Captain and Lynnfield native David Gallo, captivated the audience with his experiences in Desert Storm and the influential veterans of his youth.

Crawford quoted renowned poet G.K. Chesterton in his speech: “Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die.” He reiterated that all American veterans share a common bond rooted in the unwavering belief in freedom.

Gallo’s military journey began when he enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1984. He was mobilized during Desert Storm in 1990 and went on to earn his commission as an officer in August 1993. Rising to the rank of captain by August 1997, he served until his retirement in 2007. Gallo shared how local veterans, including Lauren Lengyel, a Vietnam POW, inspired him during challenging times.

Gallo recounted how Lengyel’s story helped him face his fears in battle. He reached out to Lengyel via email as he prepared for retirement, expressing gratitude for the inspiration he provided. Lengyel’s response, thanking Gallo for his service, left a profound impact on him.

During his speech, Gallo stressed that the sacrifices made extend beyond the veterans themselves. “I remember my own wife being much more nervous about me going off to war than I was,” he remarked, highlighting the emotional toll on families. “The families aren’t always so lucky.”

Gallo concluded with a powerful message: “How we treat our veterans, how we honor them, determines whether future generations are willing to serve — and that has a direct impact on the security of our country and its people today and every day.”

The ceremony served as a vital reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and the ongoing commitment of the town of Lynnfield to honor their service. As the community reflects on these stories, the urgency to support veterans and their families remains paramount.

Residents are encouraged to continue the conversation on how best to honor and support those who have served. The impact of such ceremonies resonates in the hearts of many, ensuring that the legacy of sacrifice and courage is never forgotten.
