UPDATE: Jacksonville’s Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) is experiencing an unprecedented surge in dachshund adoptions following the arrival of over 70 dachshunds and a viral video from local TikTok creator Bethany Michel. The shelter is promoting free adoptions to ensure these lovable pets find homes quickly.
Just this week, 16 dachshunds have already been adopted, with many more expected to arrive shortly. The influx began when a breeder reached out to ACPS, overwhelmed by their breeding situation. Chief Michael Bricker confirmed that a breeding arrangement unexpectedly exceeded capacity, prompting shelter intervention.
The rapid adoption rate is partly due to Michel’s heartwarming TikTok content, which has garnered over 1 million views on her recent video showcasing the new dachshund arrivals. “I never expected to get a million and a half views,” she said, reflecting on the overwhelming public response that has led to a near-instantaneous adoption of multiple dogs.
The positive effects of this viral moment are clear. ACPS reported that while the dachshunds captured public interest, the attention also accelerated adoptions for around 20 to 25 other dogs who are eagerly awaiting homes. Chief Bricker noted, “These 16 dachshunds actually helped an additional 20 or 25 dogs get adopted that probably wouldn’t have gotten adopted that quickly.”
Looking ahead, ACPS anticipates about 30 more dachshunds arriving next week, with potential additional groups following. To keep the community informed, the shelter is leveraging social media platforms, especially Facebook, to announce when dachshunds will be available for adoption.
In conjunction with this influx, ACPS is running a “clear the cages” campaign throughout the month, making it an ideal time for adopters looking for new furry companions. Additionally, adoptable dogs will be featured during the Jacksonville Jaguars game this weekend as part of their “tailgate” event, further increasing visibility for these lovable pets.
The story of the dachshunds’ rapid adoption highlights the powerful role social media can play in animal welfare. With the community’s response so far, ACPS is optimistic about finding homes for all the dachshunds and other animals in need.
