Bernie Kosar Remains Hopeful While Awaiting Liver Transplant

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar is maintaining a hopeful outlook as he awaits a critical liver transplant. This comes after enduring more than seven surgeries and a week-long hospitalization at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Kosar’s scheduled transplant last weekend was postponed due to an infection found in the donor organ.

In a recent update from his hospital room, Kosar shared insights into his health journey, emphasizing the importance of a positive mindset. “I can’t wake up without thinking of some of the great words of some of my awesome coaches, like Coach Howard Schnellenberger and Coach Don Shula,” he stated. He recalled their lessons on how attention to detail in small matters reflects overall performance. Kosar noted, “Each day when you wake up you never stay the same. You get better or worse.”

Doctors have been focused on managing internal bleeding, a complication that has necessitated multiple surgeries. The former NFL star showcased the medical equipment surrounding him during his update, which included several IVs. “You can see all the IVs behind me. Left hand all really loaded up with a couple IVs and a midline. Getting ready to attack the day,” he remarked. While the bleeding has slowed, the need for a liver transplant remains urgent.

In addition to his liver complications, Kosar has also been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which he acknowledges as part of his ongoing health challenges. Despite this, he remains committed to inspiring others through his resilience.

Support has poured in from various quarters, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who expressed his admiration for Kosar. “Well Bernie, we love you, and we just pray for you and hope you get better. You’ve given back so much to the Cleveland area and to Youngstown and really the whole world, and you’re someone who’s very, very special,” DeWine said.

Kosar encourages others to prioritize their health, stating, “I wake up early and I make the conscious decision each and every day to be better, especially to all the people, families, and communities who we’re able to touch in the course of our day.” He concluded with a motivating message: “You matter! Let’s all have a winning day.”

As Kosar continues to navigate these health challenges, his fighting spirit remains a source of inspiration for many, reflecting his deep connection to the community and the legacy he has built as a beloved figure in the world of sports.
