UPDATE: The City of Madison is taking urgent steps to alleviate significant traffic delays caused by stalled trains. As part of a new initiative, AI cameras will be installed at key railroad intersections, enabling real-time notifications for residents about train activity.
Residents will receive alerts on their mobile devices if trains are arriving, departing, or stalled at specific intersections. The live camera feeds will also be accessible on the city’s website, providing instant updates to help drivers plan their routes effectively. The Creative Cities Fund, through philanthropists John and Heather Seifert, is financing the project with a contribution of $10,000.
City IT Director Chris White announced that the cameras are expected to be operational in just two weeks, with notification systems launching approximately one month later. This initiative aims to empower residents, like those needing to navigate to dance classes or sports fields, with timely information to prevent unnecessary delays.
“Madison can be a smart community. We can monitor train schedules so families can choose alternative routes before they leave home,” stated Josh Allen, CEO of the Committee of 100. The cameras will be positioned at crucial points, particularly between the intersections of Main Street and Sullivan Street, where traffic regularly bottlenecks.
Long-standing complaints from residents highlight the frustrations of being stuck behind lengthy trains during peak hours. This has raised concerns for emergency response times as well. During a work session held on Wednesday, city leaders discussed both short-term and long-term solutions to the traffic issue, drawing participation from various organizations, including railroad manager Norfolk Southern Inc..
Norfolk Southern’s representative revealed plans to apply for a federal grant in January to explore the possibility of constructing an alternative railway to help reduce congestion in downtown Madison. However, she cautioned that such a project would take years to complete.
