Hilo’s Moku‘ola Bridge Collapses; Emergency Repairs Underway

UPDATE: An urgent situation is unfolding in Hilo, Hawaii, as Hawaii County has initiated emergency procurement procedures to address a serious incident involving the Moku‘ola bridge. A section of the footbridge connecting Waiakea Peninsula to Moku‘ola (Coconut Island) collapsed on November 14, prompting immediate action from local officials.

According to Parks and Recreation Director Clayton Honma, the county is hiring a structural engineer to assess the damage and determine the next steps for the popular island park. “The engineer’s initial evaluation will focus on immediate decisions, such as whether to remove the collapsed section or keep it in place while we plan for a new or rehabilitated bridge,” Honma stated.

The bridge, opened to pedestrian traffic in 1969, was previously used for transporting maintenance equipment. The collapse occurred while county crews were conducting routine maintenance, raising urgent safety concerns for public access. Honma emphasized the potential for cost savings if the failed section remains intact during reconstruction.

Mayor Kimo Alameda highlighted the cultural significance of Moku‘ola, stating, “Until the bridge is deemed safe, all access to Moku‘ola is prohibited.” He reassured the community that efforts are underway to restore access as quickly as possible, although compliance with environmental laws and other regulatory approvals will influence timelines.

The county initially estimated the repair costs at $2 million, but Honma clarified that this figure was not comprehensive. “It’s too early to provide a total estimate as it depends on the project’s ultimate scope and construction bids,” he explained. The project could take between 18 to 24 months to complete, with the county managing it through the Department of Parks and Recreation, while the Department of Public Works will facilitate the bidding process.

Local residents and visitors are urged to stay clear of the closed area for their safety, as officials work diligently to evaluate and expedite the reconstruction process. The community’s support and patience during this critical time are appreciated.
