In a remarkable display of talent and camaraderie, Penn State running backs Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton solidified their legacy during their final game at Beaver Stadium. The duo led the Nittany Lions to a commanding 37-10 victory over Nebraska, marking their place in the university’s storied football history.
Allen achieved a significant milestone by becoming Penn State’s all-time leading rusher, surpassing Evan Royster with a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter. He finished the game with 160 rushing yards and two touchdowns, bringing his career total to 3,954 yards. Singleton, meanwhile, tied Saquon Barkley‘s career touchdown records, contributing 95 all-purpose yards and scoring two touchdowns himself.
Strength of Their Bond
The bond between Allen and Singleton, which began when they arrived at Penn State in 2022, has only strengthened over time. As roommates and teammates, they have shared countless hours of training and competition, fostering a friendship that transcends the field.
“It’s special because it goes back to all the winter workouts,” Allen reflected. “Pushing each other and feeding off each other means a lot. He’s my brother, and we are just tight.” Singleton echoed this sentiment, emphasizing their mutual support: “There’s no jealousy or anything like that. We’re happy for each other. We want the best for each other.”
Both players have demonstrated exceptional performance under pressure. Singleton has adapted to a secondary role behind Allen without complaint since Terry Smith took over as interim head coach on October 12. Their unity has been pivotal in setting a strong example for the team during a challenging season.
Historic Achievements
With their accomplishments, Allen and Singleton have joined an elite group of just nine Penn State running backs to have multiple 1,000-yard seasons, a list that includes the likes of Ki-Jana Carter and Blair Thomas. Their statistics reflect not only individual talent but also their ability to elevate each other’s performances.
If Singleton gains just 24 rushing yards in the upcoming game against Rutgers, they will finish their collegiate careers ranked first and fourth on the all-time rushing list. “I was confident four years ago, but we had to put the work in,” Singleton noted. “It’s unreal. I haven’t taken a moment to think about it. It’s been so fast.”
The significance of their achievements was not lost on the players. Allen expressed gratitude for the opportunity to break the record, stating, “If we could have been winning the whole season and I didn’t get the record, I’d rather do that. I’m just glad I got an opportunity to do this.”
As the Nittany Lions look to the future, Allen and Singleton’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the program, providing a bright spot in a season that has otherwise been disappointing. Their efforts earned praise from Smith, who referred to them as “the dynamic duo” and highlighted their unselfishness and support for one another.
Both players have not only achieved personal milestones but have also become role models for future generations of athletes at Penn State. Their journey reflects the essence of teamwork and determination, qualities that will resonate within the program long after their departure.
