Montesano Bulldogs Fall to Fourth in State After Heartbreaking Losses

UPDATE: The Montesano Bulldogs have placed fourth in the 1A State Tournament following two devastating losses in Federal Way on Saturday, October 28, 2023. This marks the Bulldogs’ fourth appearance in the state final four in five years, but their quest for a title continues to elude them.

In the state semifinals on Friday, the Bulldogs faced a crushing 5-0 defeat against the top-seeded Cedar Park Christian Eagles. The match, held at Federal Way Memorial Stadium, saw Montesano struggle to keep pace. Senior forward Deandra Dan dominated the game, scoring three goals and leading the Eagles to victory.

Montesano’s hopes were dashed early when Dan opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Despite a disallowed goal for Cedar Park Christian, Dan added two more before halftime, capping off her hat trick with a goal in stoppage time. The Bulldogs, outshot 20-3, found it nearly impossible to break through the Eagles’ defense, managing only one shot on goal in the final minutes.

After a grueling semifinal, the Bulldogs faced Bear Creek in the third/fourth-place game on Saturday. Montesano initially took a commanding lead, with midfielder Lainey Robinson scoring just five minutes in, followed by a goal from junior forward Jaelyn Butterfield in the 58th minute, putting them ahead 2-0.

However, in a shocking turn of events, Bear Creek rallied back with two late goals, tying the game at 2-2 and forcing overtime. In the penalty shootout, Montesano faltered, losing the shootout 4-1 after missing critical shots. Coach Fidel Sanchez expressed disappointment but praised his team for their resilience and accomplishments throughout the season.

“We just have to figure out how to get to that final,” Sanchez stated. “It was a good season, but we need to address our inability to close out games.”

With a final record of 17-4-2, Montesano’s journey in the tournament concluded with hard-earned lessons and a determination to improve for next season. The team, despite their losses, showcased remarkable talent and potential, leaving fans hopeful for the future.

Next season, Montesano aims to build on their successes and address the challenges that cost them crucial games this year. As the Bulldogs reflect on their performance, the focus will be on strengthening their roster and enhancing their game strategy for a better chance at the title in the coming years.
