BREAKING: The Medina City Council has just approved a vital $50,000 donation aimed at combating food insecurity among local residents. During a finance committee meeting held on November 24, 2023, council members unanimously confirmed this donation to support Feeding Medina County in its mission to distribute food to families in need this season.
Council President John Coyne emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating, “These are taxpayer dollars, so the funds should be going back to the people of the city.” The donation comes as a direct response to the growing need within the community, where approximately 11.4 percent of the population relies on SNAP benefits or similar programs.
The funds will be specifically allocated to purchase and distribute food exclusively to Medina residents. Councilor Chet Simmons highlighted plans for a large food distribution event, scheduled for December 2023, potentially at the city rec center or another accessible location. “We would do that from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with support from local organizations like Rotary and Kiwanis,” he stated.
For families unable to attend the drive, Feeding Medina County will prepare food bags available for pickup at their office during weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The executive director, Janet Newcomer, anticipates that this donation will enable them to provide assistance to between 300 and 400 families, offering essential items like milk, eggs, frozen proteins, fresh produce, and pantry staples.
The council recognizes that while this donation addresses immediate needs during the holiday season, the demand for food assistance will continue into the new year. Mayor Dennis Hanwell pointed out that numerous philanthropic businesses and foundations within Medina may be willing to contribute additional resources. “If there is interest in doing some fundraising, we could form a committee to gather more support,” he suggested.
