UPDATE: The West Torrance girls basketball team has kicked off the Battle at the Beach Tournament with a commanding 49-38 victory over Village Christian, showcasing their potential as they aim for the CIF-SS playoffs this season. Early this evening at Redondo Union High, the Warriors surged out to a significant lead, fueled by standout performances from freshman Kayla Nayak and sophomore Hailey Igbokwe.
Nayak, who netted a game-high 17 points, opened the scoring spree with a series of impressive plays, including three 3-pointers. The Warriors built a remarkable 14-point lead in the first quarter, establishing control early on. “We started out really well, especially defensively,” said West coach Keith Prendergast. “I’m proud of how we responded to their runs and secured a solid win.”
As the game progressed, the Warriors extended their advantage to 22 points by halftime, thanks in part to Nayak’s shooting prowess and a critical 3-pointer from Katie Moore. Despite a late surge from Village Christian, which cut the deficit to 15 points late in the third quarter, West Torrance maintained their composure. Igbokwe contributed significantly with 9 points and 11 rebounds, helping stabilize their lead in the final quarter.
“This tournament is important for us to do well in,” Igbokwe stated. “It gives us a good idea of what to expect as we move into league play.” Nayak echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of building momentum: “Doing well in this tournament will set the tone for the rest of the season. We aim to hang a CIF banner.”
West Torrance will continue pool play on Wednesday against Leuzinger, with all eyes on their performance as they seek to solidify their standing for the upcoming league games. Fans and supporters will be eagerly watching to see if the Warriors can keep this winning streak alive as they pursue their playoff aspirations.
