UPDATE: Trinity Christian has just pulled off a stunning comeback, defeating University Christian 27-12 in the Region 1-1A final, securing their place in the state semifinals next week. The Conquerors faced a daunting 12-point deficit early in the game but showcased remarkable resilience to turn the tide.
The dramatic clash, held on Friday night, saw Trinity’s defense rise to the occasion, highlighted by Terrell Pinkney, who transitioned from outside linebacker to an emergency cornerback. Pinkney intercepted two crucial passes in the fourth quarter, including one returned for a touchdown, sealing the victory against their crosstown rivals.
Trinity’s offense also shone, with freshman running back Micah Anderson delivering a pivotal 46-yard touchdown run that gave the Conquerors a decisive 20-12 lead with just five minutes remaining. “It feels good. I just feel like we need to go to state,” said Anderson, emphasizing the team’s determination to achieve more.
Despite numerous opportunities for University Christian, including 12 possessions on Trinity’s side of the field, they managed only 12 points, all scored in the second quarter. The Christians struggled significantly in the second half, recording a mere 56 total yards and failing to capitalize on several drives.
Trinity’s defense, bolstered by injuries to key players, demonstrated formidable strength. With two starting corners sidelined, Pinkney stepped up alongside freshman Camren Hall, both effectively shutting down UC’s passing game. Pinkney’s performance was particularly noteworthy; he described his strategy, stating, “Stay deep, don’t get beat… I see the ball, get the ball.”
Head Coach Dorminey praised Pinkney’s adaptability, noting, “He hadn’t played much corner all year… but he’s long, and he’s been offered by Michigan, so he can play anywhere on the field.”
However, Trinity’s path to the semifinals wasn’t without challenges. The team faced significant issues, including three blocked punts and a troubling 131 yards in penalties. These shortcomings could prove costly against stronger opponents in the upcoming rounds. The final four teams will be re-seeded based on the FHSAA points rankings, leaving Trinity uncertain whether they will host or travel for the next game.
As attention turns to the state semifinals, Trinity Christian is eager to reclaim their title ambitions. The last time they reached this stage was in 2021, when they triumphed against Hialeah Champagnat. With eyes set on a return to the championship, the Conquerors are determined to clean up their game and capitalize on the momentum they’ve built.
As the playoffs continue, all eyes will be on Trinity Christian as they prepare for their next challenge. Fans and players alike are filled with hope as they inch closer to the ultimate prize: a spot in the state title game.
