UPDATE: An officer-involved shooting unfolded in downtown Troy, NY, on July 15, 2023, leaving the suspect, Michael Rodriguez, in critical condition after an intense confrontation with police. Authorities report that the incident began shortly before 10 p.m. when a woman called 911, claiming her ex-partner was chasing her while armed with a handgun.
According to the Troy Police Department, the victim reported that Rodriguez had threatened her, holding a gun to her head. He fled the scene, prompting police to respond immediately. Officers located Rodriguez walking on Ferry Street near 6th Avenue.
As officers exited their vehicles to make contact, Rodriguez allegedly opened fire without provocation. Officers returned fire while seeking cover, adhering to their training. The victim managed to escape unharmed, fleeing westbound on foot.
Rodriguez continued to evade police but soon fell in a parking area, dropping his firearm and illegal narcotics. Additional officers quickly arrived, securing the weapon and providing medical assistance. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he remains under police custody.
Both officers involved were evaluated at a local hospital but were not physically injured. The names of the officers will be released soon, as the investigation continues with assistance from various specialty units of the Troy Police Department and the New York State Police.
In a statement, Police Chief Daniel DeWolf expressed pride in the officers’ commitment to community safety, stating, “While the initial response has concluded, the trauma endured by the involved officers remains. We are committed to supporting our members in the days ahead.”
Rodriguez, a known parolee supervised by the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, faces potential charges stemming from this incident. He was previously convicted of Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon related to a 2019 incident in Troy.
Mayor Carmella R. Mantello emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting, “It is nothing short of a miracle that no other individuals, officers or community members, were injured by the suspect’s deadly actions tonight.” She highlighted the unpredictability of police work, stating, “Tonight’s incident is a stark reminder that even a seemingly routine call can escalate into a critical and dangerous situation.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Troy Police Department at (518) 270-4411. As the investigation unfolds, community members are reminded of the risks faced by law enforcement daily.
