Philip F. Nolan III, affectionately known as “The Mayor of Ashfield,” passed away at the age of 67 on February 10, 2026. He died in the comforting environment of his home in Ashfield, Massachusetts, surrounded by his loving wife, Melissa, and their dog, Sophie.
Born on October 27, 1958, to Philip Jr. and Ardis, Nolan was a lifelong resident of Ashfield. His educational journey included attending Sanderson Academy and Mohawk Trail Regional High School (MTRHS), followed by graduation from Greenfield Community College (GCC). Although he initially worked as a land surveyor, Nolan discovered his true passion in 1988, becoming an attendant at the Ashfield Town Dump. There, he became a familiar and friendly face, always ready to greet the community with a smile.
Community Engagement and Creative Pursuits
Known for his distinctive sense of humor and creativity, Nolan expressed his talents as a cartoonist. His work occasionally appeared in the Ashfield News, and he self-published a comic book focused on recycling, distributing it to local refuse centers. Music also played a significant role in his life; he frequently participated in open mic nights and performed with his band, The Dumpsters.
Nolan’s contributions to the community extended beyond his artistic endeavors. He was a genuine “townie,” often seen around Ashfield with a Diet Coke in hand, embodying the spirit of the town he cherished. His friendly demeanor and commitment to community engagement made him a beloved figure among residents.
