A new electric vehicle (EV) charging hub has opened in Pendleton, Oregon, offering fast charging capabilities alongside solar power and energy storage solutions. Developed by XCharge North America, the hub features four dual-dispenser GridLink chargers, providing a total of eight charging ports. This initiative marks a significant step in expanding EV infrastructure amidst ongoing discussions about clean energy at the federal level.
Located approximately 209 miles east of Portland, the charging hub is situated at the Wildhorse Resort & Casino’s Arrowhead Travel Plaza. The installation aims to cater to the growing number of EV users by ensuring compatibility with various vehicle models. Each charging unit is equipped with four NACS and four CCS1 ports, maximizing accessibility for drivers.
Details of the Charging Hub
The new hub boasts a 40-kilowatt solar array, which provides 10 kilowatts of solar capacity to each charger, supplementing grid power. This flexible system allows operators to adjust how much electricity is drawn from the grid at different times of day to balance cost and carbon intensity.
Each charging port can deliver up to 194 kilowatts of power, dynamically allocated based on vehicle demand to enhance efficiency. The facility also incorporates a 215-kilowatt-hour battery energy storage system, using lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry known for its safety and durability. This energy storage feature enables the hub to optimize power supply and enhance overall performance.
For payment, drivers can initiate charging sessions through various methods, including credit card, tap-to-pay, or QR code, making the process user-friendly and convenient. The site also offers essential amenities such as restrooms, food, and beverages at the adjacent travel center, catering to both local and long-distance travelers.
Strategic Location and Future Prospects
The charging hub’s strategic placement along Interstate 84 provides easy access for EV drivers traveling across western Oregon. This location is expected to bolster the region’s EV infrastructure, encouraging more drivers to opt for electric vehicles.
The installation of this fast charging hub represents a positive development in the landscape of clean energy, highlighting the potential of solar power in supporting sustainable transportation solutions. As electric vehicle adoption continues to grow, facilities like this will play a crucial role in supporting the transition towards greener energy sources.
