The Platte River Power Authority (PRPA) has announced a temporary closure of the Power Trail in Fort Collins from March 2 to March 19, 2024. This closure affects the section between Harmony and Prospect roads along Timberline Road, as the authority undertakes critical upgrades to its transmission infrastructure.
The work involves the installation of fiber optic cable as part of a project to enhance the electric grid’s communications capabilities. According to PRPA, the new Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) will be installed along the top shield wire position of the transmission lines in this area. This upgrade not only aims to bolster communications but also provides reliable grounding shields for improved lightning protection.
Sturgeon Electric Company, Inc., the contractor assigned to this project, will manage the operations. Flaggers will be stationed at the Power Trail, and traffic controllers will assist where the transmission lines intersect with Horsetooth and Drake roads. Despite the nature of the work, PRPA anticipates minimal disruption to traffic flow during this period.
To help users navigate the closure, signs will be posted directing them to an alternate route. PRPA emphasizes that the project timeline may change depending on weather conditions, underscoring the importance of flexibility in infrastructure projects.
Updates, including any alterations to the Power Trail closure timeline and details about the detour route, can be found on the PRPA’s official website at prpa.org/transmission/fiber. This project represents a significant investment in enhancing the reliability and safety of the region’s electric grid, reflecting PRPA’s commitment to maintaining high standards of service for the community.
