Community Remembers JoAnn Slocum, A Life of Love and Service

JoAnn Slocum, a beloved member of her community, passed away on January 4, 2026, following a brief illness. Born in Schenectady, NY, she was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Mary DePalma Popolizio. JoAnn leaves behind her husband, David Slocum, of Niskayuna, their son Christopher Slocum, and her cherished grandchildren, Cameron, Jack, and Gabriella “GG” Slocum, all residing in Connecticut. She is also survived by her sister, Rosemary Popolizio Stewart, her husband Clifford Stewart, and her niece, Michele Stewart Mannino.

JoAnn and David’s journey began at Alpert’s Furniture Store, where they both worked. David served as the sales manager while JoAnn took on the role of credit manager. Their partnership blossomed into a beautiful marriage that lasted over 50 years.

A passionate reader, JoAnn cherished her books and found joy in her career at Craig Elementary School within the Niskayuna School District. After years of dedicated service, she embraced her retirement, which offered her the opportunity to explore her interests further.

Life Beyond Work

JoAnn enjoyed spending time at the Schenectady Yacht Club and loved embarking on adventures in their RV. Trips to Mystic with her grandchildren and excursions to the Finger Lakes were some of her most treasured moments. She was known for her thoughtfulness, never missing the chance to celebrate the birthdays, anniversaries, or holidays of those around her.

In recent years, JoAnn faced personal challenges with remarkable strength and courage. Her resilience inspired family and friends alike, and her presence will be deeply missed.

Final Farewell and Legacy

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during calling hours on January 15, 2026, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205. A memorial service will follow at 5 p.m.. In accordance with the family’s wishes, a private burial will take place at a later date at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
