The upcoming reboot of Fable is set to integrate a remarkable feature: more than 1,000 non-playable characters (NPCs) that will interact dynamically with player actions. Developer Playground Games has introduced these characters as part of what they call ‘The Living Population,’ each designed to respond uniquely to players’ choices, whether heroic or villainous. This ambitious project comes with its own set of challenges, particularly for the art team responsible for creating living environments for each NPC.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, studio general manager Ralph Fulton elaborated on the innovative approach taken for the reboot. He stated, “We knew that we wanted every NPC to be persistent, which is to say, you could, if you were so minded, follow an NPC around all day, and they will autonomously do the things that they do every day.” This means players can expect NPCs to engage in daily routines, from waking up and going to work to enjoying leisure time and returning home at night.
Fulton emphasized that players’ choices will directly influence the lives of these characters. For instance, purchasing buildings in the game’s world could lead to evicting NPCs or assigning them specific roles. This level of interactivity necessitates a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment. Fulton reflected on the implications of this design choice, noting, “And immediately, you know when you hear that, certainly as a developer, you start going, ‘Oh, okay, so every NPC, and there’s more than 1,000 of them in the game, needs a bed.’ And you have that conversation with the environment art team, and they’re like, ‘they need what now?'”
The creation of such a vast number of NPCs is not only a technical achievement but also a significant undertaking for the entire development team. Each character’s daily routine adds layers of complexity to the game, pushing the boundaries of traditional RPG design. The developers aim to weave these intricate narratives into the gameplay, promising players a rich and engaging experience.
The Fable reboot is slated for release later in 2023 across multiple platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, PC, and PS5. Despite the excitement surrounding the game, Fulton confirmed that the reboot will not feature a dog companion, a staple of the original series, stating, “I was hoping that nobody would ask that question.”
As the release date approaches, the Fable team is focused on bringing this fantastical world to life, balancing creative storytelling with the technical demands of a game that boasts a living, breathing population.
