Louisiana Seeks Nominations for 2023 Louisianan of the Year

As 2023 draws to a close, the conversation around the most impactful individuals in Louisiana is gaining momentum. The opinion pages of a prominent Louisiana newspaper have initiated the “Louisianan of the Year” feature, inviting residents to nominate individuals who have made significant contributions to the state this year. Nominations will be accepted until mid-December, allowing ample time for community input.

The criteria for selection are intentionally broad. Nominees must have strong ties to Louisiana, which can include both natives and individuals who have lived and worked in the state for an extended period. Notably, the discussion includes individuals with deep Louisiana ancestry, even if they have not resided in the state, such as a notable leader of the Catholic Church. This aspect of eligibility remains open to interpretation, and public opinions on the matter are welcomed.

It is important to note that this recognition is focused on living individuals who have made a notable impact in 2023. While many influential Louisianans have passed away this year, the emphasis is on those actively shaping the community and beyond. Although a positive impact is preferred in nominations, the organizers acknowledge that perceptions of impact can vary widely among individuals.

To maintain freshness in the nominations, individuals previously awarded the title of Louisianan of the Year are not eligible for consideration this year. For instance, Governor Jeff Landry, who was recognized for his influence in 2022, will not appear on this year’s ballot. The public is encouraged to submit nominations for a diverse range of contributors, from political figures and civic leaders to artists, entrepreneurs, educators, and religious leaders.

In the week of October 30 to November 6, the letters inbox received a total of 69 submissions from the community. Notably, the recent loss of the LSU football team to Texas A&M prompted a surge of interest, generating ten letters focused on the topic. Additionally, concerns surrounding the government shutdown were voiced in four letters, with another four addressing the potential jeopardy of SNAP benefits amid the ongoing discussions.

The newspaper is eager to hear from the community. Readers are encouraged to share their thoughts on who has been making a difference in their lives and neighborhoods. By the end of the year, the most compelling nominations, alongside the newspaper’s selections, will be published, highlighting the individuals who have shaped the Louisiana landscape in 2023.
