Edelman Questions Patriots’ Super Bowl Readiness After Bills Loss

The New England Patriots suffered a setback in their pursuit of a Super Bowl title after a disappointing loss to the Buffalo Bills, bringing their record to 11-3 under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel. Former Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman expressed skepticism about the team’s championship aspirations during a recent appearance on “The Herd,” stating, “I view it that they’re not there yet.”

In a dramatic Week 15 matchup, the Patriots entered halftime with a commanding 21-point lead. However, the second half saw a stark turnaround as the Bills, led by quarterback Josh Allen, mounted a comeback, leaving New England scrambling for answers. Edelman emphasized the importance of closing out games, saying, “You gotta play your best football at the end of the game. At the end of the season, which they haven’t done.”

Edelman noted that the Patriots are still a young team, highlighting a familiar adage: “Can’t win until you keep from losing.” He pointed out that the Patriots have struggled defensively, particularly in the red zone, where they allow touchdowns 75% of the time, ranking last in the league.

Despite the end of their impressive 10-game winning streak, Edelman views this loss as a potential opportunity for growth. “This is a good thing for them,” he remarked. “It’s hard to win in this league. They just rattled off a 10-game winning streak, that’s insanely impressive.” He believes the team can benefit from recalibrating their focus as they head into the closing weeks of the season.

Looking ahead, the Patriots will face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night before traveling to play the New York Jets in Week 17. They will conclude their regular season at home on January 4, 2024, against the Miami Dolphins. As the playoffs approach, the team will need to tighten their performance to contend for a potential Super Bowl run.

Edelman remains optimistic that the return of key players, such as Milton Williams from injured reserve, will bolster the defense. The absence of linebacker Robert Spillane during the Bills game was also a setback, further complicating their defensive strategy.

As the Patriots continue to navigate this season, the challenge remains clear: to transform their potential into consistent performance on the field, especially as the stakes grow higher in the coming weeks.
