Northeast Iowa Agency Launches Fall Prevention Program for Seniors

The Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging (NEI3A) is launching a program aimed at reducing fall risks among older adults. On November 17, 2023, from 09:00 to 14:30, NEI3A will host the Healthy Steps for Older Adults (HSOA) program at the Fayette Community Library, located at 104 W. State Street in Fayette. This initiative addresses a significant health issue, as falls are reported to affect one in four individuals aged 65 and older each year.

The HSOA program is specifically designed for adults aged 50 and older. It incorporates evidence-based fall risk screening and educational components to help participants understand and mitigate the risks associated with falls. The interactive class will provide practical guidance on several vital topics, including:

– The importance of choosing proper footwear
– Strategies for making homes safer
– Nutritional advice to support bone health
– Simple exercises aimed at improving strength and balance

Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a handbook filled with exercises and resources to help maintain health and independence.

The event includes lunch and is available for a suggested voluntary contribution of $25. Scholarships are also offered for those requiring financial assistance. Interested participants are encouraged to register by November 13, 2023, by contacting Missy Anders at 319-874-6893 or via email at [email protected].

Improving Quality of Life for Older Adults

The initiative is part of NEI3A’s broader mission to enhance the lives of older adults across 18 counties in Northeast Iowa. As one of six Area Agencies on Aging in Iowa, NEI3A focuses on assisting older individuals in responding to their evolving needs and choices. The agency aims to empower seniors and their caregivers by providing essential information, services, and support, enabling them to age in place comfortably and safely.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults, impacting their mobility, independence, and overall quality of life. Through programs like HSOA, NEI3A seeks to combat these statistics and promote healthier, more confident futures for seniors in the region.
