Remembering Carolyn Hacker: A Life of Service and Passion

Carolyn Mailliard Hacker, aged 87, passed away on November 21, 2025, in San Rafael, California, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Her life journey began in 1938 in San Francisco, where she was the eldest daughter of J.W. Mailliard and Margaret Field. Carolyn’s family had a rich history in the Bay Area, with connections spanning San Geronimo, Cotati, Yorkville, and San Francisco, all of which held significant meaning for her throughout her life.

During her childhood, Carolyn traveled extensively with her family while her father served in the United States Army. After World War II, they returned to San Francisco, where she attended several educational institutions, including KD Burke School, Katherine Branson Girls School, and later, Connecticut College for Women.

In 1963, Carolyn settled in San Rafael, where she would reside for more than sixty years. She cultivated a passion for gardening, earning several accolades at the Marin County Fair for her impressive floral displays. Beyond her green thumb, Carolyn enjoyed knitting and was dedicated to genealogy, investing countless hours in research to preserve her family’s history for future generations.

Her commitment to community service was evident in her many volunteer roles within the Miller Creek Elementary School District and the San Rafael City Schools District from 1972 to 1980. Carolyn believed in giving back to the community, reflecting her deep-rooted values of education and service.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Paul Hacker; her children, Barbara and Lyn; grandchildren, including Andrew, and a great-granddaughter, Jocelyn. She also leaves behind her sisters, Kathy and Margot, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held in honor of Carolyn’s birthday and Mother’s Day in May 2026. In lieu of flowers, her family requests memorial contributions be made to the San Rafael Public Library Foundation or the Marin Humane Society. Carolyn Hacker’s legacy of love, service, and dedication to her family and community will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
