Woodbury School Shifts to Online Learning Amid Flu Outbreak

A charter school in Woodbury, Minnesota, has decided to transition to online classes due to a significant increase in influenza cases among its students. The Math and Science Academy reported that over 20% of its student body has contracted influenza or influenza-like illnesses, prompting this move to ensure the health and safety of its community.

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, schools are required to report influenza cases if 10% of enrolled students are affected. The department has noted a rise in illnesses across various schools in the state. In a statement, Garry Bowman, the department’s infectious disease epidemiology public information officer, emphasized the importance of staying home when feeling unwell. “Hand hygiene is always important. Wash your hands. That can really reduce the spread of influenza, and probably the best thing people can do is get vaccinated,” he advised.

The Math and Science Academy announced that numerous students have been missing classes due to the virus and do not expect attendance to improve in the immediate future. After careful consideration, the academy has opted to conduct online learning for the remainder of the week, which will also include the cancellation of after-school activities.

Course information and assignments will be made available on Google Classroom by 10:00 a.m. each day, ensuring that students can continue their studies despite the circumstances. In communication with families, the school reiterated its commitment to student and staff health, stating, “The health and safety of our students and staff remain our top priority. We appreciate your understanding and partnership as we take this proactive step to support our school community.”

This decision highlights the ongoing challenges that educational institutions face during flu season and the importance of community health measures in protecting students and staff alike. As the influenza outbreak continues to affect schools statewide, authorities stress preventive measures, including vaccinations and proper hygiene practices. The situation remains dynamic as schools adapt to ensure the well-being of their communities.
