Angelina College Celebrates Graduation of Future Firefighters

On March 15, 2024, ten aspiring firefighters proudly received their certifications during a graduation ceremony for the Angelina College Fire Academy’s Class 2025-64. The event took place in Hudgins Hall at Angelina College in Texas, where the achievements of the graduates were recognized.

Achievements and Recognition

Cadet James Moore from Timpson was honored as both the valedictorian and the Most Outstanding Cadet of the class. His accomplishments were highlighted during the ceremony, which featured keynote speaker Chief Debra Knight, the state fire marshal. “I’ve had the opportunity to see each of these young men grow and mature throughout the course of this academy,” stated Chief Jason Pope, coordinator of the Fire Academy. “To say I’m proud of them is an understatement.”

Chief Pope emphasized the academy’s mission to cultivate skilled firefighters dedicated to the traditions and professionalism of the fire service. He expressed confidence that the graduates have met this goal, stating, “With this group, I believe we’ve accomplished just that.”

Words of Inspiration

During her address, Chief Knight, a retired colonel who served as a combat medic in the U.S. Army, commended the cadets for their hard work and commitment. “Completing this program is no small feat,” she remarked. “It takes grit, perseverance, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to serve others. You should be proud of what you’ve accomplished, and your families should feel proud of you as well.”

She shared personal experiences to remind the new firefighters of the importance of teamwork and adaptability in the face of adversity. “Emergencies will come when you least expect them,” Knight cautioned. “There’ll be times when you think you’re done, but your training and discipline will carry you through.”

Moore, who is also a military veteran, reflected on the transformative experience he had during the rigorous 16-week program. “I don’t think I could have done this without my new brothers,” he stated. “In this time, we’ve made lifelong memories and friends, and I look forward to working with you guys and getting after it.”
