In a heartfelt initiative, blind massage therapist Steven Stewart is giving back to his community by offering free massages to single parents in Orland Park, Illinois. Since opening his practice, Unsighted Massage, in September 2025, Stewart has committed to supporting those who face challenges similar to what his mother endured while raising him and his siblings.
Stewart, who lost his sight eight years ago, reflects on his transformation, stating, “I’m in a better place now than I was back then — physically, emotionally, mentally.” Transitioning from a career as a forklift driver to a massage therapist, he acknowledges that his blindness was the catalyst for this significant change in his life.
In a recent announcement, Stewart revealed plans to provide complimentary massages to five randomly selected single parents, chosen through social media entries. He explained his motivation, saying he wants to honor his mother, who sacrificed so much for her family. “A lot of my overhead is my time and my hands, and I don’t mind giving that to people,” Stewart stated.
His first giveaway coincided with a troubling time for many families in Illinois, as approximately 2 million residents lost their SNAP benefits due to a federal government shutdown. Moved by the stories of families struggling to afford food and basic necessities, Stewart felt compelled to take action.
Support for Stewart’s initiative has come from unexpected places. Tracy Beagarie, who discovered Stewart’s work on social media, booked a massage shortly before he announced the giveaway. After meeting during her appointment, Beagarie offered to create charcuterie boards for the selected single parents, believing that kindness should often be anonymous.
Stewart’s generosity has resonated throughout the community. His social media posts have sparked emotional responses, leading him to extend his giveaway beyond the initial five massages. “I had one client who broke down in tears just because of how bad she was struggling,” he shared. While he aims to help, Stewart emphasizes that only single parents should participate in the giveaway to ensure that the support reaches those truly in need.
Community Support and Personal Connections
The owner of Nicole Richards Hair Salon, Mary Lynn Fleck, has also been a significant supporter of Stewart. Having worked in the salon since her teenage years, Fleck noted that she has never seen another massage therapist with as much dedication and consistency in client relationships.
Fleck, who was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after acquiring the salon, has benefited from Stewart’s lymphatic drainage therapy. She expressed her gratitude for the relief he provided during her treatment, stating, “It was the best night’s sleep I got throughout my whole chemo treatment.” Their connection extends beyond professional boundaries, as both have experienced life-changing challenges.
Stewart’s desire to support others aligns with Fleck’s vision for her salon. She believes that his commitment to building a business while helping others is commendable. “There are not many people who could have their sight taken away and turn around and give back as much as Steven has given back,” Fleck asserted.
Stewart’s journey is a testament to resilience and compassion. As he continues to offer his skills to those in need, he invites others to participate in acts of kindness, reinforcing the importance of community support. His story exemplifies how personal struggles can inspire meaningful contributions, making a significant impact on the lives of others.
