Community Mourns Loss of Esteemed Nurse Edith Anne Shannon

Edith Anne Rachel Shannon (Gray), a respected nurse from Elkhorn, Wisconsin, passed away on October 9, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on November 6, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she dedicated over 50 years to the field of anesthesia, earning recognition for her commitment and expertise.

Shannon began her journey in healthcare after graduating from West Mifflin North High School. She pursued nursing at the Shadyside School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, where she laid the foundation for a successful career. As a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), she served at various hospitals, including Arlington Hospital in Virginia, Lakeland Hospital in Elkhorn, and West Allis Memorial Hospital. Her extensive experience also included locum tenens positions at multiple healthcare facilities.

Shannon’s contributions to her profession extended beyond her clinical duties. She played a vital role in mentoring young nurses and advocating for patient safety. Her dedication inspired many in her community and the nursing profession.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Anne Evelyn Elko (Cano) and Lawrence James Gray, as well as her brother Florian Steve Elko, sister Evelyn Elko (married to Ed Jett), and her beloved daughter Christen Michaela Shannon. Her husband, James Patrick “Jimmy” Shannon, also passed before her, leaving a profound impact on her life.

Shannon is survived by her three daughters: Carol Marie “Carie” Gitlin (married to Jeff), Catherine “Kate” Irene Shannon, and Cailan Michelle Shannon. She leaves behind cherished grandchildren, including Chase and Jenna Gitlin, as well as Michaela Shannon Cowen, who will continue to honor her legacy.

A funeral mass will take place at 11:00 AM on December 5, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, followed by a luncheon for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School or Doctors Without Borders, organizations that reflect Shannon’s compassionate spirit and commitment to helping others. Her impact on the lives she touched will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
