Nigerian-American artist Temi Coker has launched a new home collection inspired by his cultural heritage, now available at Walmart. This collection, designed to celebrate the duality of African and African American identities, includes items such as vases, pillows, throws, and rugs. Prices range from less than $13 to $320, making it accessible to a wide audience.
Coker, originally from Lagos, Nigeria, and currently based in Dallas, aims to create heirloom pieces that can be passed down through generations. “My children are the product of two cultures,” Coker stated. He emphasized the importance of creating pieces that honor the vibrant textiles and colors of his Nigerian upbringing while also reflecting his wife’s African American heritage.
Designs Rooted in Heritage
The collection features vases that showcase textured surfaces, mirroring the intricate patterns found in Black hairstyles. Coker explained that these items are not merely decorative; they are intended to carry “memory, tradition, and culture into tomorrow.” Several of the vases are 3D printed in the United States, allowing Coker to refine the designs until they matched his vision.
The vibrant color palette—grass green, teal blue, warm red, and black—pays homage to the lively culture of Nigeria while appealing to modern American households. Coker remarked that these pieces reflect the diverse backgrounds of families creating their own traditions.
Coker’s partnership with Walmart represents a significant milestone. “This isn’t luxury for the few, but legacy made accessible to all,” he noted. By collaborating with a retailer that has deep roots in his community, where his first pair of shoes were purchased, Coker finds this launch particularly meaningful.
Walmart’s Commitment to Diversity
Walmart has stated that this collection aligns with its ongoing commitment to partnering with diverse creators, aiming to provide customers with home décor that reflects the communities it serves. According to Creighton Kiper, Senior Vice President of Home at Walmart U.S., “We’re on a journey to democratize style. Partnering with artists like Temi Coker allows us to uniquely deliver style and joy to every space, effortlessly and affordably.”
Coker’s background as a visual artist, designer, and creative director has earned him a reputation for vibrant, Afrofuturist-inspired work that celebrates Black culture and contemporary identity. His client roster includes prominent names such as Google, Nike, Netflix, Adobe, and The New York Times. Recognized by esteemed organizations like the Type Directors Club and the Society of Illustrators, Coker is regarded as one of the leading voices in contemporary design.
The Temi Coker collection is available online at Walmart, providing an opportunity for families to enhance their living spaces with meaningful, culturally inspired designs. As Coker continues to bridge his heritage with modern aesthetics, he invites everyone to experience the beauty of his creations.
