Danielle Shoykhet Elected Beachwood’s First Female Council President

Danielle Shoykhet has made history by becoming the first woman elected as president of the Beachwood City Council. On January 5, 2024, Shoykhet received unanimous support from her fellow council members during a ceremonial meeting that also saw the swearing-in of Mayor Justin Berns for his second term.

Mayor Berns, who ran unopposed in the November elections, was sworn in by Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Court Judge Francine Goldberg. Judge Goldberg noted that she had administered the oath to Berns when he first began his public service a decade ago as a councilman, and again four years ago when he took office as mayor.

In addition to Shoykhet’s election, the council appointed Jillian DeLong as the new vice president. Shoykhet expressed her gratitude to her colleagues in her acceptance speech, stating, “I am truly honored to accept your nomination as the council president for the next two years. It means a lot to me that I have your confidence and support.”

Shoykhet emphasized the importance of collaboration among council members, acknowledging that differing perspectives strengthen the council’s effectiveness. “We do not always see every issue the same way, but our different perspectives are what I believe makes us stronger, especially when we listen with respect and lead with intention,” she remarked.

The newly elected president recognized the significant contributions of her predecessor, Alec Isaacson, calling him an “extraordinary example of leadership.” Looking ahead, Shoykhet outlined immediate goals, including the establishment of committee memberships and a clear legislative agenda to guide the council’s work.

Her commitment to fostering a positive relationship with the administration was evident as she stated, “I care deeply about the Beachwood community and serving alongside all of you.” Shoykhet’s vision reflects a dedication to enhancing the council’s service to residents.

The meeting also highlighted the changing dynamics of the Beachwood City Council, which now features five women, including Shoykhet, DeLong, and Councilwomen June Taylor, Ali Stern, and Alex Jacobs. Isaacson and Pete Smith are the only two male representatives on the council, showcasing a shift towards greater diversity in leadership.

District 11 Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Sunny Simon attended the event and expressed her pride in the council’s evolution. She recalled a time when Beachwood’s council was entirely male, saying, “It makes me proud, it makes me happy — and a takeover of women at the helm.” Simon’s remarks underscored the significance of this moment in Beachwood’s history.

Ohio District 21 State Representative Eric Synenberg, a former Beachwood councilman, also addressed the meeting, lending his support to the new leadership. Judge Goldberg praised Mayor Berns, highlighting several accomplishments during his tenure, including the city’s $8 million purchase of the former Fairmount Temple property and the installation of a new electronic reader board sign at City Hall.

Goldberg also noted Berns’ commitment to community engagement, stating, “Your mental nimbleness; attention to detail; trusting department directors; the ability to compromise, communicate, and listen to council members and residents are strengths that enhance and benefit this great city.”

Berns, a long-distance runner, shared his plans to compete in the Dopey Challenge at Disney World, a series of races totaling 48.6 miles over four days. His athletic pursuits further illustrate his dedication to perseverance and commitment, values that resonate with his role as mayor.

As Beachwood moves forward under the leadership of Shoykhet and Berns, the city is poised for a new era of governance. The council’s focus on collaboration and community service promises to create a positive impact for residents in the coming years.
