Finnair Cancels Flights for Thousands Over Cleaning Error

Thousands of airline passengers faced significant disruptions as Finnair canceled numerous flights due to a cleaning error involving its aircraft. Between October 13 and 21, 2023, the airline announced the temporary suspension of operations on a portion of its A320 fleet, specifically affecting eight A321 aircraft. This decision followed revelations that the seat covers on these planes had been improperly cleaned with water, rather than the approved detergent.

According to a statement from a Finnair spokesperson, this cleaning mishap raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of the fire-retardant chemicals on the seats, potentially compromising safety. Reports indicate that the airline had not adequately verified the impact of this cleaning method on the fire protection of the aircraft. These developments were covered extensively by the Independent and Flight Radar.

As a result of the cancellations, over 10,000 passengers experienced delays and changes to their travel plans. Finnair representatives indicated that they would minimize disruptions by making aircraft changes, although this could lead to overbooking on select flights with their partner, Lithuanian airline DAT LT, starting from October 15. Affected passengers were informed that they would be contacted via text message regarding their flight status.

Despite the widespread cancellations, Finnair stated that it would not offer compensation for the disrupted flights. The airline categorized the cleaning error as an “exceptional circumstance” stemming from a design or manufacturing fault. Consequently, they deemed rebooking passengers onto alternative flights as sufficient compensation, according to Finnish media reports.

In light of the situation, airline spokespeople emphasized that safety remains their top priority. They assured passengers that Finnair adheres to the manufacturers’ maintenance instructions and follows the recommendations of relevant authorities. The airline also expressed regret for the “uncertainty and inconvenience” caused to travelers due to the disruption of their plans.

Moving forward, Finnair aims to restore normal operations and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future. The airline has pledged to focus on maintaining high safety standards while addressing the needs of affected passengers.
