A remarkable holiday display featuring over 4,000 lights has transformed a home in Stilwell, Kansas. The creative mind behind this stunning spectacle is Tom Barnett, who has dedicated the past 12 years to building and enhancing his light show. Every year, Barnett introduces new elements to ensure his neighbors are greeted with a fresh and joyful experience as they pass by.
Innovative Techniques and Community Inspiration
Barnett’s light display has not only captivated local residents but also inspired his neighbors to create their own festive decorations. He has even lent his knowledge and skills to the local Arboretum, sharing his passion for holiday lighting with the community. Barnett credits a friend from Mission Hills for teaching him a unique method of setting up lights.
“I learned from a guy in Mission Hills, a friend of ours,” Barnett explained. “I watched him shoot a potato gun, and I thought, ‘We can do that.'” However, Barnett’s technique diverges from traditional methods by utilizing a bow and arrow. This method allows him to achieve impressive heights and placements for his lights.
“A bow and arrow comes in really handy,” he noted. “I shoot an arrow over a limb with fishing line attached. I’ve weighted the head of the arrow so it drops down. Then, I tie that to a rope or string and pull it back over, so now you have two pieces on either side of the limb, and then you tie one of those pieces to the lights.”
Meticulous Planning and Execution
The setup process begins in September, with Barnett working diligently through October and into November to complete the display. He emphasizes the joy he derives from this project, stating, “This is really fun. I get a lot of joy out of doing this. It’s just something to do to make people smile.”
