Inaugural Tour de Friendship Bike Ride Set for November 9
The inaugural Tour de Friendship charity bike ride will take place on November 9, 2023, in Boca Raton, aiming to raise funds for the Friendship House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting individuals with special needs and their families. Organized by Rabbi Sholom Kessler, the executive director of the Friendship House, this event invites community members to participate in a challenging 60-mile ride along the scenic coast.
The Friendship House, established in 2020 under the auspices of Chabad of Central Boca Raton, currently supports approximately 70 local families. Kessler emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, stating, “Oftentimes, children with special needs are overlooked and we are here to change that.” His vision is to create an environment where individuals with special needs can thrive and positively influence their communities.
All proceeds from the bike ride will contribute to year-round programming for children and young adults at the Friendship House. Kessler views the event as an opportunity for community engagement, expressing that it allows participants to unite in a shared purpose. “It’s an opportunity for the Boca community to come together, not just in support, but in shared purpose,” he noted.
Participants are encouraged to raise $1,500 each, and those who meet this goal will receive a commemorative Tour de Friendship bike jersey. Registration is available at tourdefriendship.com, where individuals can also volunteer or donate to specific riders. There is currently no deadline for registration, allowing more people to join the cause.
On the day of the event, riders will gather for a light kosher breakfast at the Friendship House campus before embarking on their journey. The route will take cyclists along State Road A1A to Palm Beach and back, with planned breaks every 15 miles for refreshments and bike support. Although cyclists can bring their own equipment, options for bike rentals will also be available.
Kessler highlights that while the 60-mile distance is substantial, the event is designed to accommodate riders of all skill levels. He acknowledges that many participants have been training in preparation, including himself, who has been cycling with a group on Sundays. “I think the value of riding and people in the community putting their foot to the pedal to raise funds for special needs makes them a part of it,” said Kessler.
As the event approaches, excitement builds in the Boca Raton community. The Tour de Friendship not only promises a physically rewarding experience but also fosters a spirit of camaraderie and support for those with special needs.
