Jets Cornerback Kris Boyd Breathes on His Own After Shooting

New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd is now breathing independently as he recovers from a serious gunshot wound sustained during an incident outside a restaurant in Midtown Manhattan. The shooting occurred in the early hours of March 10, 2024, leaving a bullet lodged in his right lung. Boyd shared an update on social media, expressing gratitude for the support he has received, saying, “God is real. God is powerful. I’m sorry I have no words at the moment… just grateful.”

In his Instagram post, Boyd, 29, included a picture of himself smiling from his hospital bed at Bellevue Hospital. He added, “I’m coming along, starting to breathe on my own now. Sincerely appreciate everyone!”

The incident took place around 02:00 when Boyd, having celebrated at the Asian fusion restaurant Sei Less, became involved in a fight outside the establishment. According to police sources, Boyd and his friends had left the venue at the same time as another group, which later became embroiled in a confrontation. The circumstances surrounding Boyd’s involvement remain unclear, and it is uncertain whether he was the intended target of the shooting.

Law enforcement has released surveillance footage of the suspected gunman, who fled the scene carrying a black backpack. The shooter was last seen running east on W. 38th Street before turning onto Broadway towards W. 36th Street. Police are also searching for two luxury vehicles linked to the incident, a blue BMW X6 with New York plates and a silver Mercedes-Benz GLS with Michigan plates. A license plate reader recorded the BMW crossing the Willis Avenue Bridge into the Bronx approximately 20 minutes after the shooting.

Boyd, who joined the Jets this year on a $1.6 million one-year contract, has not yet played a game for the team due to a season-ending shoulder injury. Previously, he played for the Houston Texans. He has been an outspoken advocate against gun violence, notably expressing his devastation following the 2022 elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers. Boyd created a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $30,000 in memory of the victims, highlighting the emotional toll of such tragedies.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential as the investigation continues.
