A couple from Massachusetts has turned their lifelong passion for furniture making into a successful enterprise, demonstrating that the concept of retirement can take many forms. After nearly 50 years in business, Gerhart and Brigitte Klein continue to thrive with their company, Brigger by Klein Design, which specializes in creating “formed for function” furniture.
Gerhart Klein, now 92 years old, began his journey in furniture design in the mid-1970s. Frustrated by the lack of appealing chairs in local furniture stores, he decided to craft his own. By the mid-1980s, he had established his current manufacturing facility, marking a significant milestone in his career. The furniture is made from locally sourced wood and fabrics, featuring a Scandinavian-inspired design that emphasizes both comfort and flexibility. “I make comfortable chairs,” Klein stated, reflecting his dedication to quality craftsmanship.
Despite his age, Klein shows no signs of slowing down. He humorously likens his energy to that of a certain battery-powered mascot. When he launched his furniture business, he was simultaneously working as a chemical engineer for a local company that eventually became known as Duracell. In 1985, he made the decision to leave behind corporate life and focus entirely on his furniture business, which he describes as “an interesting challenge.”
Alongside him throughout this journey is his wife, Brigitte Klein, who has been by his side for over 62 years. Their partnership extends beyond personal life into their business, as the company name Brigger combines elements of both their names—BRIGitte and GERhart. Klein attributes much of the company’s success to his wife’s contributions, stating, “She’s quality control.” Their harmonious collaboration reflects a relationship built on years of shared experiences and mutual support.
Recently, the couple has modernized their business strategy by relaunching their website, shifting focus towards online sales, which now comprise most of their revenue. This adaptation showcases their commitment to staying relevant in an evolving marketplace while continuing to pursue their passion for furniture design.
