Meadowview Elementary School in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, celebrated its lead custodian, Frank Irvine, with the prestigious Golden Apple award for his exceptional contributions over the past three years. Irvine has not only maintained the school’s cleanliness but has also inspired students to take pride in their environment through engaging initiatives.
Promoting Responsibility Through Friendly Competition
During a recent ceremony, Travis Logslett, principal of Meadowview Elementary, praised Irvine’s efforts, stating, “The staff, the kids, it’s amazing. It’s every day, it’s an adventure. He just does so much for our building.” One of Irvine’s notable initiatives is the “Golden Tray” competition, which encourages students to keep the cafeteria clean while fostering a sense of responsibility.
“The kids have to earn it during the week based on their behavior and performance in the lunchroom,” Irvine explained. Classes that demonstrate exemplary conduct can win the Golden Tray, granting them perks such as sitting with friends or enjoying an additional recess. The excitement peaks on Friday afternoons when Irvine announces the winners over the PA system, igniting cheers throughout the school.
Acknowledging Community Support
The Golden Apple award not only recognizes Irvine’s dedication but also highlights the community’s support. Both Irvine and Meadowview Elementary will receive $500 each, courtesy of generous sponsorship from Student Transit and the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation. This financial contribution will further enhance the school’s programs and facilities.
Logslett emphasized the positive impact Irvine has made on the students, noting, “You can hear the screams through the whole building, like everybody’s so excited.” Irvine’s rapport with students is evident, with many approaching him throughout the day to lend a helping hand.
In reflecting on his role, Irvine expressed his affection for the school community, saying, “Love the building, love the staff and kids. It’s like having another 400 kids.” His commitment to fostering a supportive and engaging environment is a testament to the vital role custodians play in educational settings.
Congratulations to Frank Irvine for receiving the Golden Apple award, a well-deserved recognition of his hard work and the positive influence he has on the students at Meadowview Elementary School.
