North Ridgeville High School senior Alaya Wilson has achieved remarkable recognition in the 2025 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, earning an esteemed American Vision award for her photograph titled “Still.” This accolade places her among the top young artists in the region, as only five American Vision awards are granted in each county, advancing winners to the national competition.
Wilson’s photography journey began when she took a class at North Ridgeville High School as a sophomore. Since then, her passion has blossomed into a burgeoning photography business, specializing in portraiture and even capturing moments at two weddings last summer. Her photography teacher, Dalia Erney, expressed her pride in Wilson’s achievements, stating, “The passion Alaya embodies for her photography has really become the avenue for her personal and creative growth on many levels. I have seen her become a shining star and I couldn’t be more excited for her. I can’t imagine a more deserving student.”
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are highly competitive, with entries evaluated by panels of professionals who award Gold Keys, Silver Keys, and Honorable Mentions. Those receiving Gold Keys proceed to national-level competition. Annually, more than 1,500 students are recognized with national awards. Notable past winners include literary and artistic luminaries such as Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, and Truman Capote.
This year, nearly 1,400 works were submitted for consideration, with approximately 600 selected for exhibition. North Ridgeville High School students collectively garnered four Gold Keys, eight Silver Keys, and thirteen Honorable Mentions, highlighting the institution’s commitment to fostering artistic talent.
An exhibition showcasing the awarded works will take place at the LCCC Stocker Center in Elyria on January 18, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.. This event provides an opportunity for students, families, and community members to celebrate the artistic achievements of local youth.
As Wilson prepares for the national competition, her story serves as an inspiring example of how passion and dedication can translate into significant recognition and opportunity.
