The New York Police Department (NYPD) collaborated with the Candlelighters charity on December 14, 2023, to create a festive holiday experience for families affected by childhood cancer. The event took place at the Central Park Precinct, where the stationhouse was transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with decorations and appearances by beloved superhero characters, such as Spider-Man.
As snow blanketed Central Park, families from various locations, including those who had traveled from abroad, gathered for the celebration. Among them was the Negodiuk family, who fled Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict after their son, Mark, was diagnosed with brain cancer. Dima Negodiuk, Mark’s father, shared their journey of escape and gratitude for the assistance they received.
“We drove a car, we saw tanks. We saw military guys. And when you don’t know if it’s your guys or it’s the Russian enemy,” Dima recalled. After crossing the border into Poland, they received support that allowed them to travel to New York, where they found refuge at the Ronald McDonald House. “It’s really amazing so far,” he added, expressing his appreciation for the event.
Barbara Zobian, a representative from Candlelighters, emphasized the importance of providing joyful experiences for children facing serious health challenges. “Kids are heroes when they shouldn’t be. They should just be kids,” Zobian stated. She highlighted that the event allowed children to engage in fun activities and enjoy their childhood, which is often disrupted by illness.
The event included opportunities for children to interact with K-9 units, explore police technology, and meet various officers. The highlight of the day came with the arrival of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, who were escorted by the NYPD Highway Patrol. The excitement among the children was palpable as they rushed to present their wish lists and share candy with the festive guests.
Detective Luis Moreira spoke about the significance of the event, noting, “We’re not just here to celebrate joy. We’re here for hope.” He expressed the profound impact of bringing happiness to families who have traveled great distances for medical care.
Overall, the collaboration between the NYPD and Candlelighters created a heartwarming atmosphere, bridging communities and offering a respite to families during a challenging time. As children laughed and made memories, the event underscored the necessity of support and kindness in the face of adversity.
