St. Mary Parish Delivers Thanksgiving Cheer with Free Community Meal

St. Mary Parish in Elyria hosted a free community Thanksgiving meal on November 27, continuing its long-standing tradition of supporting the local community. This annual event, which also occurs on Christmas Day and Easter, provides a welcoming space for individuals and families to enjoy a hot meal together during the holiday season.

According to organizer and volunteer Jerry Schill, the community meal aims to cater to everyone. “We’re trying to cater to everybody,” Schill stated. “They couldn’t be more grateful for everything – we’re here serving them, and they’re participating as much as they can.” Guests had the option to enjoy their meals through home delivery, takeout, or dining in, with a menu featuring turkey, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, salad, rolls, and a selection of handmade desserts.

The event anticipated serving between 550 and 650 meals by the end of the day. Schill noted an increased demand this year, attributing it to the current economic and political climate. “It’s been really steady – we’ve seen a greater demand so far already today,” he remarked.

Community Spirit and Volunteer Efforts

Volunteers played a crucial role in the success of the meal, with duties divided among approximately 100 individuals working together. This included serving guests who chose the sit-down dining option in the decorated gym of the St. Mary School, where meals were served on china plates.

“It takes about 100 people to pull it all off,” Schill explained. The initiative started about 17 years ago as a way to teach his children about volunteerism and giving back to the community. Since its inception, Schill’s family, along with numerous community members, have actively participated in the event.

“It started out with, ‘Be the change you hope to see,’ so we had a lot of kids early on that were really, really active,” Schill said. The event has grown into a significant community effort, emphasizing the importance of togetherness and support during the holidays.

The free community meal at St. Mary Parish not only provides nourishment but also fosters a sense of belonging among attendees. As the event continues to thrive, it highlights the power of community spirit and the dedication of volunteers who work tirelessly to make it a success.
