Tori Oehrlein Shatters Minnesota Girls Basketball Scoring Record

CROSBY, Minn. — Tori Oehrlein of Crosby-Ironton made history on January 20, 2024, by becoming the all-time leading scorer in Minnesota girls’ basketball. With a remarkable total of 5,085 points, Oehrlein broke the previous record of 5,060 points held by Rebekah Dahlman. The record-breaking moment occurred during a Great River Conference game against the Mille Lacs Raiders, marking a significant milestone for the senior guard.

Oehrlein entered the game needing just 33 points to surpass Dahlman’s record. She achieved this feat with a right-handed layup, just under five minutes before halftime, amidst enthusiastic cheers from the home crowd at the Dave Galovich Gymnasium. Dahlman, who traveled to support Oehrlein, presented her with flowers after the record was broken, creating an emotional atmosphere for all in attendance.

Reflecting on the experience, Oehrlein stated, “I’m just grateful to do it here in Crosby in front of the community that we have. I’m grateful for all of my family members and my coaches.”

The game was paused at a score of 54-15 to honor the historic achievement. Crosby-Ironton’s head coach, Pete Vukelich, prepared a video tribute, as he anticipated being too emotional to deliver a speech. Following the tribute, Oehrlein expressed her appreciation for the support she received throughout her career.

As for her performance, Oehrlein finished the game with an impressive 57 points, marking her third game scoring over 50 points in just two weeks. The Rangers secured a dominant victory over Mille Lacs, ending the game with a score of 126-39. With this win, Crosby-Ironton improved to 13-5 overall and remains unbeaten in the conference.

Oehrlein’s teammates acknowledged her incredible talent and work ethic. Senior Lucy Lewandowski, who scored 24 points in the game, shared her admiration: “It’s been really fun being her teammate. I’ve been watching and playing with her since fifth grade.” Another senior teammate, Sammie Hachey, noted the thrill of witnessing Oehrlein’s athletic prowess, particularly during fast breaks.

In addition to her scoring record, Oehrlein showcased her all-around skills, achieving a quadruple-double with 21 rebounds, 13 steals, and 10 assists. This versatility has made her a key player for the team, as noted by Hachey, who praised Oehrlein’s ability to see the court.

Vukelich, who is deeply connected to the local community, highlighted the significance of Oehrlein’s achievements. “To coach Tori and see the love and appreciation she gets from not only the senior citizens of the world but also my little girl, who is five and already looks up to her, is just unbelievable for the town of Crosby,” he said.

After the game, Oehrlein reflected on her journey, revealing that her original goal was to achieve 1,000 career points and 1,000 assists. “I think this town is a basketball town and I’m just glad girls’ basketball is on the map again for Crosby. Not just boys,” she added, emphasizing her desire to inspire future generations.

With this historic achievement behind her, Oehrlein and the Rangers look ahead to their next challenge against Pine City on January 22, 2024, as they continue their pursuit of excellence on the court.
