A bed-building event took place on October 25, 2023, in the Wellington Village Square, where almost 100 volunteers and local students gathered to construct beds for children in need. This initiative was organized in partnership with the nonprofit organization, Good Knights of Lorain County, which aims to provide handmade beds to underprivileged youth at no cost.
Roger Dorsey, president and executive director of Good Knights, expressed gratitude for the city’s support, stating, “This is our first build (here) – the city was gracious enough to let us use the square.” Dorsey noted that the beds constructed during this event would supply the organization for approximately a month.
Significant financial backing for the event came from local organizations, with a total of over $50,000 raised by the Wellington Eagles No. 2015, the Wellington Masonic Lodge No. 127, and the Kiwanis Club of Wellington. All beds produced during the initiative will include mattresses and linens, ensuring that children receive complete bedding.
The Kiwanis Club, with a primary focus on supporting children, actively participated in the event. Brian Burke, treasurer of the Kiwanis Club, remarked, “When this opportunity presented itself, it made total sense for us to be a part of it. It’s been a great partnership – it just worked.”
Volunteers from various organizations, as well as numerous students from Wellington High School and Keystone High School, played a crucial role in the construction of the beds. Students involved in multiple sports teams, including football, soccer, basketball, and cheerleading, collaborated to make the event a success. Dorsey expressed pride in the community’s involvement, stating, “I’m so proud of (the Villages of) Wellington and LaGrange for coming out and supporting.”
The event also aimed to raise awareness about Good Knights of Lorain County and its mission. Dorsey mentioned that several attendees inquired about how to receive beds for children in need. He remarked on the impressive turnout, especially considering the cold weather, and noted, “It has been amazing to see the community, and they’ve already said they want this to be an annual event.”
With the success of this initiative, organizers hope to continue fostering community engagement in support of local children. For more information about Good Knights of Lorain County and their mission, interested individuals can visit goodknightsoflc.org or call 440-420-5430.
